Vertical Farming, The Future of Farming?

Vertical farming is a topic we have covered before. Usually we talk about the higher yields, the shorter harvest times, and the fact that you need fewer resources, such as soil, water, and even light, in order to grow food using vertical farming techniques. All of that is true, and it can be a great way to grow more of your own food if you have limited space and the patience to get it all setup and running.

Another benefit though? It can better withstand certain natural disasters, say, hurricanes and flooding for example. Late last year we had some pretty major weather events here in the U.S. which included several hurricanes. While Hurricane Harvey flooded the Gulf Coast near Houston, including many farms, one farm only lost about 5% of their total crop even with 10 inches of water covering their floors. Moonflower farms uses vertical farming, and because of this, most of their crop was well above the flood waters that had destroyed other crops in the area ravaged by the hurricane.

This is just another benefit of considering vertical farming, not only for off grid living, which it can be a perfect fit for, but for larger scale operations as well.
