There are all kinds of ways to get started on an off grid lifestyle. In fact, you are only limited by your imagination (and probably building codes) when it comes to finding creative ways to make yourself an off the grid tiny home. One way is to build some sort of trailer, or to convert an existing vehicle into a mobile tiny home.

One type of vehicle that can lend itself well to such a conversion is a van, especially one originally designed for delivery or other types of work as they tend to have more room in their cargo area without all the various odds and ends that may get in the way of a simple conversion.

Plus, finding used work vans of one kind or another isn’t too hard and even used, some receive regular maintenance and care as part of a fleet service and may be available fairly cheap at auctions.

Nate Murphy did one such conversion and from start to finish it took him about 17 days and he did the work himself, including the wiring and mounting of solar panels along the roof to provide the power he would need and also a small kitchen unit, a nice sized bed and storage.

Now of course these types of conversions are lacking in a few areas, most notably the lack of a bathroom, but they can still be great off grid campers for those who want to live a more mobile life, or who simply like to get away from it all for their vacations or camping, fishing, or other outdoor activities.

You can check out the video on Nate’s conversion, and see a list of materials and tools in the description here: How to convert a Van in to an Off-Grid Camper in 17 Days!
